Fong Chung-Ray, born in 1933 in Henan Province, China, is a distinguished artist renowned for his pioneering contributions to the abstraction movement in Chinese painting. His life and career, marked by a blend of traditional Chinese artistry and modern abstract expressionism, reflect a unique journey through tumultuous times, leading to the creation of a distinctive artistic language that bridges Eastern and Western aesthetics.
Fong's early life was significantly impacted by the socio-political upheaval of his time. At the age of 14, amidst the Chinese Civil War, he was compelled to leave his family and join the navy as a lieutenant, eventually settling in Taiwan in 1949. This period of exile and military service introduced him to diverse experiences and locations, setting the stage for his later artistic explorations.
Despite the challenges of his youth, Fong's passion for art and his inquisitive nature drove him to explore Western abstract art, which he discovered through journals and books available in the American Library in Taipei. In 1957, alongside his friend Hu Chi-Chung, he founded the Four Seas Artists Association, marking the beginning of his formal engagement with the art world. His early experiments with abstraction and Western techniques, particularly painting with oil on canvas, showcased his willingness to innovate and push the boundaries of traditional Chinese art.
Fong's artistic journey took a significant turn in 1961 when he became a member of the Wuyue Group (Fifth Moon Group), participating in numerous exhibitions and further establishing his presence in the art scene. Under the guidance of Liu Guosong, a prominent painter and theorist of the group, Fong transitioned back to the traditional Chinese technique of ink painting in 1963. He innovated within this medium by creating a brush made from palm tree fibers, adding a personal and textured quality to his work. This period saw the creation of abstract ink works that were deeply rooted in the tradition of Chinese master landscape painters, blending subtle coloring, dynamic strokes, and poetic elements.
Fong's exploration of art took him beyond the borders of Taiwan. In 1971, he was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation grant, enabling him to travel to Europe and the United States. Settling in San Francisco in 1975, he began working with acrylic paint, initially focusing on abstract landscapes before delving into Buddhist spirituality. This new source of inspiration led to a more abstract approach in his work, related to temporality and the effects of time on materials, as well as an exploration of collage and imprint techniques.
Throughout his career, Fong Chung-Ray has held numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including at prestigious venues such as the Galerie Du Monde in Hong Kong, the Modern Art Gallery in Taipei, the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University, and the Guangdong Museum of Art in China. His work is collected by major institutions and collections internationally, including the Ashmolean Museum in the United Kingdom, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, the Centre Pompidou in France, and the M+ Museum in Hong Kong.
